Day Workshop

The Day Workshop opened in 1996 to give Milltown residents and people from the neighbourhood the chance to work together on different practical projects. As well as growing plants, which we sell locally, we make a range of wooden garden items such as bird tables and nest boxes,in our new woodworkshop, and we work outside on our five-acre smallholding. In our main workshop we restore hand tools that have been donated to us, which we then send to Africa through the charity Tools for Self Reliance. We are also actively involved in a new project with another charity the Global Concerns Trust; this project is funded by the Scottish Government. It will enable us to send tools to projects in Malawi, and to receive good quality feedback about where the tools have gone and who is using them. People who work in the Day Workshop have different needs – some have a learning disability, some have had an accident, some have had a stroke – but we all work with our differing abilities to achieve a positive end product that we can feel proud of. We have a team of seven co-ordinators, all part—time, and there is also the possibility for local people to come and work with us as volunteers.
